Use of a car or motorbike is essential (there is no public transport). Nearest airport: Carlisle (44 miles) or Liverpool (100 miles). Nearest motorway junction: M6 J38.

West Coast Main line - watch steam specials from the sitting room windows. Settle-Carlisle line 17 miles (Kirkby Stephen) and 16 miles (Appleby). Alston line 30 miles. Lakeside and Haverthwaite line 25 miles.

Orton

The George, pub, recently re-opened. Post Office + village stores; Kennedy's Chocolate Factory; Farmers' Market (a very good one) - second Saturday in the month. All Saints' Church (dates from ~13th C). (see http://www.orton.org.uk/)

M6 Service areas

Tebay Northbound, Tebay Southbound and J38 Tebay "Truckstop" - Prizewinning service areas, not your usual run of the mill. Food shopping, meals, newspapers, confectionery, books, toys, gifts, farm produce and speciality foods (and you can sit outdoors and feed the ducks too). Petrol and diesel on Northbound and Southbound are at Motorway prices. There are increasing numbers of EV charging stations. (see http://www.tebayservices.com/)

Tebay

The Cross Keys, pub.

Junction 38 "Truckstop" services (petrol, diesel, newspapers, local shop and drivers' cafe); St James' Church. (see http://www.visitcumbria.com/evnp/tebay/) Two garages on the industrial estate at the south end of the village do repairs but not fuel (see Truckstop).

Shap

Pubs: The Crown; The King's Arms; The Greyhound.

ScotMid Co-operative stores; Post Office & newsagent & village store (re-opening 1st November 2023). Award-winning Shap Chippy, Fish and Chips, Pizzas. Abbey Kitchen cafe. St Michael's Church (dates from 750 AD); Shap Abbey (a mile out of the village). (see http://shapcumbria.wordpress.com/) The garage at the north end of the village does repairs but not fuel.
